The “Live: Verified Updates” page was set up in late-September in response to growing rumours surrounding the Occupy Central protests in Hong Kong.
The initiative was started by a group of HKU Journalism students, who set up the page with the aim providing bilingual, verified information concerning the protests to the public. The page was cited by a number of international news organisations, including CNN, Italy’s RAI, Australia’s ABC and Australia Times, and America’s The New Republic. The page received more than 100,000 likes during the period.
I worked as a correspondent for the page, and contributed to clearing up rumours by verifying information. My role included reporting on the ground of the protest camp, by interviewing different people and searching for newsworthy stories.
